A classic dish of Italian cuisine, Spaghetti Bolognese combines al dente pasta with a rich and flavorful meat and tomato sauce. Simple to prepare and full of flavor, it is a perfect meal to bring the family together at the table.
Ingredients:
400 g spaghetti
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 medium carrot, grated or finely chopped (optional)
500 g ground beef (beef or mixed)
1 can (400 g) peeled tomatoes or tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste (optional, to intensify the flavor)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or basil (or both)
Grated Parmesan cheese to taste
Fresh basil leaves (optional, to serve)
Preparation:
Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Sauté the onion for 2 minutes, then add the garlic and carrot. Cook for another 3 minutes.
Add the ground beef and sauté until browned, breaking up the pieces with a spoon.
Add the peeled tomatoes (mash them with a spoon) or the sauce, and the tomato paste if using. Season with salt, pepper, oregano and/or basil.
Simmer over low heat for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce should thicken and be very flavorful.
Toss the spaghetti with the sauce or serve with the sauce on top.
Top with grated Parmesan cheese and basil leaves, if desired.
Extra tip:
For a more authentic touch, add a little dry red wine (1/2 cup) while sautéing the meat and let it evaporate before adding the tomatoes.
